Interview at diveboard.com

Friday, April 29th, 2011

I gave Alex from diveboard.com a quick interview about the history and future of Diving Log:

I’ve been exchanging email with Sven from some time now since I wanted to ensure that Diving Log and Diveboard work well together. He’s a german scuba diver who’s been around forever and who created one of the best logbook for Windows, Diving Log. Apparently this is his first interview ever which is amazing since his software has been downloaded so many times. I hope his users will get to know him a bit better through this post.

Even though I’m currently working hard on finishing version 5.0.3 and the CCR functionality (more about that soon), I’m always looking for new opportunities to extend the ecosystem around Diving Log.

HTML Export

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

The export to HTML was available in Diving Log 4.0 and was missing in version 5.0 until now – but now it’s back and improved. It lets you export your dives to a HTML table and is probably the easiest way to publish your dives on your own website. The new export, available in the next beta, is now using CSS styles for the table design. It comes with 3 default styles, but you can edit the CSS files, which are located in your Diving Log documents folder (sub folder “CSS”) with any text editor to adjust colors and the design to your website. You can preview here all 3 default styles:

Feel free to modify these styles, create your own and if you want, send me your styles to share them with other Diving Log users. You can also select now the columns, which should be exported, in the HTML, Excel and CSV export.

Diving Log for Windows Phone 7

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

You probably already have heard from Microsoft’s brand new Windows Phone 7 smartphone, the successor of Windows Mobile. WP7 is a complete new mobile OS including an app store called “Marketplace” accessible through the Zune software. During the past few weeks I’ve created a new version of Diving Log for WP7, which is now available in the Marketplace:

Dive Details

Today I want to show you some screenshots of the UI and details about the features of the first version. WP7 has a special UI design – a very simplified design which follows the motto “content, not chrome”. It offers also a dark and light theme and several user selectable “accent colors”. Diving Log integrates nicely into the phone design and supports the dark and light theme, as well as the accent color.

Because local synchronization is not so easy on Windows Phone 7 at the moment, the sync works currently via one of the 3 supported online logbooks Divelogs, YourDiveBook or Dilogs. So you would upload your dives with Diving Log to one of these online logbooks, and then you can download the dive data onto the phone. In future I will add also a local sync via WiFi.

Sync Settings

In this first version you unfortunately can’t edit the data yet on your phone. The possibility to add, edit and upload dives will be added early 2011 in an update. So at the moment it is “view only”. Due to the way the sync works at the moment, not all data will be synced to your phone in this version (just the data which is supported by the online logbook you choose). But these things will be improved over time.

Diving Log 5.0.1 released

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

Today I’ve released Diving Log 5.0.1 which you can download on the download website. If you’ve followed this blog and installed the several beta version I’ve released during the past few weeks, you won’t notice any big changes from the previous beta, but I recommend you still update to this version as it contains minor bug fixes. If you are still running the official version 5.0.0 from March/April, I highly recommend that you update to version 5.0.1, as it contains lots of new features and many bug fixes and improvements. I will summarize here what has changed since version 5.0.0:

  • Synchronization with online logbooks (Divelogs, YourDiveBook, Dilogs, DiveLogPool)
  • Android sync function
  • Download coordinates from GPS devices
  • New coordinate panel in dive site details dialog
  • Logbook Ribbon Windows 7 Style
  • New field “Exit Time” in logbook window
  • Diving Log Viewer Update
  • Update of the Print & PDF engine
  • Update OSTC Downloader
  • Update UDCF and UDDF Import/Export
  • Subgear support in the Smart downloader and SmartTrak import
  • Import Poseidon MkVI
  • Import JDiveLog
  • Import Blackwave Dive Assistant
  • Import MacDive 2
  • Many small improvements and bug fixes
  • New GPS Tool for Windows Mobile

One remark for Dilogs users: due to changes on the Dilogs login and authentication system, the Dilogs Manager in Diving Log is unfortunately no longer working. Please use the new web sync dialog in order to upload and download your dives. Other features from the Dilogs Manager, like the dive site search, will be integrated in other windows (e.g. dive site details) in the next update, so the Dilogs Manager will then be obsolete.

New beta version available

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

You can download a new beta version of Diving Log 5.0 with several new features:

Full Setup (26 MB)
Update from 5.0.0 (19 MB)
(Please download the final version)

In the main toolbar you will find a new “Web” dropdown button, which is now the central location for cloud services like online logbooks. Currently there are 4 online logbooks included:

  • Dilogs.com – already included with the Dilogs manager, but the new sync interface offers a lightweight and easier sync experience
  • Divelogs.de – was only available in the export menu, but now you can upload and download your dives in the new sync dialog
  • Yourdivebook.com – completely new integrated with upload and download
  • Divelogpool.com – new beta portal to collect dive data for the NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) in Trondheim for a research project
  • In future MySQL sync will be added for phpDivingLog

Great news for all Android users out there: there is now a sync function from Diving Log 5.0 to the already available Android Dive Log (Dive Log Key) from Rob Knapen. It is included in the sync menu in the main toolbar of Diving Log. The sync is done at the moment only via the sdcard. Diving Log saves the file to the sdcard, Android Dive Log reads this file from the card when you use the restore function. To sync back to the desktop you must create a backup in the Android DL to the storage card, Diving Log will import that and merge the changes into the desktop logbook.

The ribbon in the logbook window could now be displayed also in the Windows 7 ribbon style:

  • Import from JDiveLog
  • French localization completed
  • Many small improvements and bug fixes

Online Dive Logs

Monday, September 7th, 2009

Today I want to show you 2 amazing open source online dive logs which have emerged from the MySQL export function included in Diving Log. The MySQL export allows you to either export a MySQL dump text file from your Diving Log logbook file, which you can import with phpMyAdmin, for example. Or you can upload directly to your MySQL database when your provider allows external access (not every hoster does allow it). With this export/upload and one (or both) of the php logbooks you can host your logbook online on your webserver.

The 1st project phpDivingLog was started by Olaf van Zandwijk, improved by Lloyd Borrett and is now developed by Rob Lensen (logbook). There is also a thread in the Diving Log support forum.

The 2nd project is Diving Log Online which was just released by Vasco NL (website). It has currently 3 templates (themes), but you can create also your own.

Both projects can be used together on the same server (in different directories) and use the same data from the database. You need a web server (shared or self hosted), PHP and a MySQL database. External access to the database enables the direct upload from Diving Log, otherwise you must export to the dump file. This is a great way to get your dives online!
