Diving Log 6.0 – Maps

Thank you for the great feedback from the previous post where I’ve shown you the first screenshots of Diving Log 6.0! Today I want to show you some screenshots of the new maps window. When you click on a dive site flag in version 5.0, the dive site shows up in the dive site window. In version 6.0, there is a new popup which shows you some detailed information right in the map window:

When you click on the popup itself, the dive site window opens where you can view and edit all dive site data, just like in version 5. When you click on the dive site image it enlarges and you can view it right on top of the map.

Another click on the image popup opens up the integrated image viewer so you can view it in full screen. Here are some more examples how you can use this feature:

Diving Log Touch update available

Today a new update for Diving Log Touch is available in the Windows Store. The update is for Windows 8 and 8.1 and contains these new features:

You can launch the Touch Downloader from within the app
Online dive site search
Dutch language added
Bug fixes and other improvements

To launch the touch downloader, make sure you have already installed Diving Log 5.0.12. The online dive site search is available in the map view. You can search either by dive site name or around the center of the map.

Online dive site search for tablet and phone

In Diving Log 5.0 on the desktop you already can perform an online search for dive sites and import new sites into your own logbook. This feature will be available now also in Diving Log on Windows Phone and Diving Log Touch on Windows 8 in the next update. You can either search for a dive site name or search for dive sites nearby, which means in these touch centric apps near the center of the map. When you tap on an online dive site flag and then again on it’s label, you can import this dive site into your logbook.

Diving Log Touch: Open the app bar and click on “Search”. Enter a search term to filter your existing dives, then tap on “Search online”. Click on “Search nearby” in the app bar to search for dive sites at the center of the map:

New maps feature in the desktop version

Having all the nice maps features in the desktop, tablet and phone apps, there remains one problem: where to find all the GPS coordinates for your existing dive sites in your logbook? When going to a new dive site you can take a GPS device with you, but that doesn’t help for your existing dives. This is getting a lot easier: in the maps window in Diving Log 5.0, you can now search 2 online sources, divelogs.de and diveboard.com.

Search sites online

Type a dive site name into the search box in the upper right corner – this will filter your existing dives in your logbook. When you click the new “Search online” button on the left side, Diving Log will query dive sites from the 2 online logbooks and display the results as yellow and blue flags on the map. When you left-click on a site flag, you can import it into your logbook. I recommend that you activate the satellite view to find the best matching flag as there is no guarantee that a position is correct.

Search nearby sites

When you know roughly the area where a dive site is located, you can right-click into the map at the approximate position. When you click on “Search near by” in the context menu, all sites around that location will be displayed. Both methods are a great way to find new spots which are currently not in your logbook. All dive sites were created by users who upload their dives to the online logbooks. The Diveboard.com synchronization will be finished soon and I’ll provide a beta version, so you can test the logbook sync as well as the dive site search in the map window.

Diving Log Touch Update (version 1.2)

While I’m working currently mainly on a new online logbook sync for the desktop version (more about that soon), I’ve completed another update for Diving Log Touch. It brings location and maps functionality, which is especially great on a tablet device. Diving Log Touch has now the dive site maps functionality, you already have in the desktop and phone version. It is using also the location service to capture your current position into the dive site details. Unfortunately most of the current devices don’t have GPS and just use WiFi triangulation, which is not very accurate.

When you tap the new “Map” tile in the navigation bar on the main screen, you get into the new full screen map, which shows all your dive sites with GPS coordinates. When you tap on a dive site you’ll see the label with the name, tap again on the label to navigate into the site details. You can also search for dive site names and use the location service to get basic navigation functionality (distance to selected dive site, speed, course, etc.), similar to that function on Windows Phone on the right.

When editing dive sites, you can now capture your current position into the coordinate fields. The lat/lon editor is now also optimized for touch keyboards with split text fields. The dive site view got also its own little map control, which just shows the current selected dive site. The view is interactive, which means you can zoom in and out and change the map mode. When you tap on the flag icon, it will navigate to the full screen map and zoom into the current selected dive site.

Diving Log 5.0.8 released

Diving Log 5.0.8 is now released and can be downloaded here. Please note: you can install the update setup only if you have version 5.0.7 or the latest beta. If you have an older version, please install the full setup instead. These are the new features:

Some of the new features were already shown in recent blog posts and are linked above. Here are some new additions:

Android SCUBALog export: I’m trying to provide some more options and choice for Android users by cooperating with other app developers and I’m glad that the first one is now available. You can export your data to the Android app “SCUBALog” (import is planned in the future). You’ll find an app switcher in the Android sync dialog where you can change the data format.

Equipment weight calculation: You could enter the weight of each equipment item for some time in Diving Log, but up to now nothing was done with this information. But now you can select any number of items in the list and the overall weight is calculated at the bottom. This is useful when preparing for a vacation, for example. Additionally you can see the weight of all checked equipment items in the logbook per dive.

Skype integration: I’m sure many of you use Skype and now you can call a phone number right from your logbook by clicking the little Skype icon behind a number in the buddy and shop dialog. This works with the Skype desktop app, but also with the new Skype app for Windows 8. Make sure to enter the country code for each number if you want to use this feature, otherwise Skype seems to have problems. If you want to use your mobile phone, you can scan the QR code to quickly call that number.

Logbook Filter and more

Today you can download a new beta version with some great new features:

New filter function for all output windows
vCard import for buddy details
UDDF 3.x import support
HeinrichsWeikamp Frog download support
Several bug fixes and other minor improvements

With the new filter window, you can create filters for any output window (logbook, details data, table editor, dive site map, statistics, printing and exports). Filters allow you to view, export or print only a subset of your logbook data, based on any criteria you want. For example, you can now view the statistics just for one year or just for your rebreather dives. You can export or print only dives where you’ve dived with just one particular buddy. Or you can view in the map window only dive sites, which are deeper than 30 m and with a rating of 5 stars (just an example).

To create a filter, click the new filter icon you’ll find now in most toolbars:

Then you will see on the right side of the current window the new filter toolbox, where you can add with “AND/OR” any number of criteria for every database field. As soon as you add, edit or delete filters, you can see the results live in the output window.

To edit a filter row, just double click it or hit the edit button in the toolbar. That way you can easily refine your filter until you get the data you want. You can save your filter to a file and reload it later on. You can also exchange filters between identical database tables, e.g. between statistics, logbook and table window or between dive site details and dive site map.

vCard Import: In the Buddy details you can import now vCard files, which can be created by most contact and email applications and webmail apps:

Click here to download the update beta setup file. This is an update from the current version 5.0.6. If you have an older version than 5.0.6, please update first to 5.0.6 and then install the beta update. Please let me know how you like the new filter function, if it works for you or if you see any crashes or bugs. The filter function integrates deeply into many parts of the application, so I want to make sure I’ve not broken any existing functionality.

Diving Log for Windows Phone update

Today Diving Log 3.1 for Windows Phone has been released to the marketplace. It contains the following new features:

Search function for lists (dive sites, buddies, etc…)
Retrieve dive site coordinates from GPS
Buddy signature for dives
Dive site map
Navigation features within the map

Your buddy can now sign your dives on the phone and the signature will sync back to the PC. The signature will also sync to the iOS Dive Log and Dive Log Manager:

The integrated dive map experience will show all your dive sites with GPS coordinates (like the PC version). When you tap on a flag the name will be shown. Another tap on the label will navigate to the dive site details page. Additionally the map can show your current position on the map and calculate navigation data like speed, distance to the selected dive site and ETA (estimated time of arrival). You can pin the map right on your WP start screen and if you have a dive site selected, it will automatically zoom to that region. That way you can quickly access your favorite dive sites or the island of your next trip right from the start screen:

Tap on the new search button in the app bar to filter countries, cities, dive sites, etc. In the dive site editor, the position button will retrieve your current position and store it in the coordinate fields. The background color shows you the accuracy (red = bad, yellow = average, green = good):
