Diving Log 6.0.7 released

Wednesday, December 7th, 2016

The latest update Diving Log 6.0.7 is now available with the following new features:

  • Layout Improvements (Group Style, XML Formatting, Empty Layout)
  • New Layouts (Subsurface, Shearwater, SuuntoDM)
  • Filter Improvements (Divetype, BuddyIDs, UsedEquip)
  • Detail Data Sorting (Buddies, Shops, Trips)
  • Cloud Sync Folder Config Button
  • Logbook Profile Graphic export improvements
  • Bug fixes and other improvements

You can now easily share any dive profile on Facebook directly from Diving Log. Optionally you can add photos and a message to the post, which will appear right on your timeline:

I’ve added a number of improvements to the logbook layout function. You can now change the style of layout groups, which was not possible previously. When you save a layout file, the XML syntax within the *.lay file is now formatted properly, so it is a lot easier to do some editing in a text or xml editor. Sometimes it is easier to do minor changes with a text editor directly in the *.lay file instead of using the layout function. I’ve also added an empty layout which you can use as a starting base to create your own layout, so you don’t have to clear up an existing layout.

Better layout XML formatting

During my tests of the layout editor, I’ve created 3 new layouts myself to see how everything works. The layouts are roughly inspired by other applications (Suunto DM, Shearwater Desktop and Subsurface) and can be downloaded from the layout website.

You can now also save a 64 x 48px image with the same name as the layout file into the layout folder. The image will be used as icon in the layout selection list in the logbook window for your custom layouts.

In the filter window, you can now apply filters to the dive type and equipment fields more easily by selecting them from a dropdown list. In the Buddy, Shop and Trip window you can change the sort order of the list. In the Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive and ownCloud sync dialog you can now configure the sync folder manually, if it isn’t picked automatically. And last but not least you can configure the profile graphic export format.

Diving Log 5.0.12 Beta 2

Saturday, November 2nd, 2013

Before releasing the next official update, you can try a new beta, which contains many minor improvements in several import functions and one long requested major feature. What’s new since the last beta from September?

  • You can now select the columns and sort order for the dive list (see below)
  • GPS coordinates are extracted from the Exif data from dive site photos (see below)
  • Android ScubaLog export improvement
  • The following import functions got improvements and bug fixes:
    • Liquivision Dive Log
    • UDDF Import (for xDeep Computer)
    • Shearwater Desktop
    • APD Inspiration
    • Suunto Dive Manager 4
    • MacDive
    • Universal Downloader

GPS coordinates from dive site photos: When you capture a photo with your smartphone or GPS equipped photo camera, the current GPS position is stored in the Exif data of the image. Diving Log will now automatically extract this information and store it into the dive site Lat/Lon fields (if the fields are still empty) as soon as you add a dive site photo. If there is already a position stored, the data won’t be overwritten by the data from the image.

Columns and sort order of the dive list: This feature was requested for quite some time and now it is finally implemented. You can select the columns and sort order of the dive list in the logbook window. That means you can display your latest dive on top of the list and you can create a rather narrow list with just the dive number or a wide list with many columns, which spread above the dive details. You can use the layout editor to move the dive list around, to configure the columns and sort order, go into the menu File > Preferences > Dive List:

Dive list with just one column

PleaseĀ download the beta now and let me know if you find any problems which should be fixed before the final release. Thank you!

Version 5.0.3 Beta 1 available

Monday, February 14th, 2011

Today you can download the first beta of the upcoming version 5.0.3. There will be more beta releases in the following weeks, because version 5.0.3 is a big update with many changes in the database logbook format. Before downloading and installing, please read these important comments:

  • This is a beta, so it could crash and probably contain bugs
  • Please backup all your logbook files, before installing this beta! During the first app launch, your logbook file format will be updated. After this update, it can no longer be edited with any previous Diving Log version (including 5.0.2). So if you ever want to downgrade to an older Diving Log version, you will need your backup! If you try to edit the new logbook format with an older Diving Log version, the application will crash!

Known issues / limitations:

  • Only the OSTC downloader currently imports gas and tank switch information automatically.
  • CCR is currently not yet supported
  • Exporting, printing and statistics make not yet use of the new data
  • SAC calculation works not yet correctly with multiple tanks and double tanks
  • Deleting tanks, which are already used in the dive profile, will cause drawing issues. You have to reset the whole gas switch data for this dive and add the switches again.

What’s included in this beta:

Extended Layout 2

Remember, you can add any button to the quick access toolbar, so it's just one click away

I hope you enjoy the new features and please provide feedback, especially if you see any crashes or problems (including usability issues). Thank you!

Diving Log 5.0 – New profile functionality and more

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

Today I’ve uploaded an update which brings a lot of the missing profile features from version 4.0. And there are a few more things included in this update:

  • Sort dives function
  • Profile data and graphic export
  • Profile split and merge
  • Profile cursor and auto scroll
  • Tank pressure gauge works now also without tank profile
  • Ascend/descend rate profile improved
  • Comments print function
  • Layout gallery in Ribbon
  • Time zone picker in country editor

The dives sorting and renumbering feature (menu File > Logbook Maintenance > Sort Logbook) is now included. Remember, in version 5.0 you can also sort a set of dives in the table editor.

Sort Dives

The profile export function allows you to export the profile data to the clipboard, text, CSV, Excel and printer and the profile graphic to the clipboard, image file and printer. The profile split and merge feature is now also included as well as the red cursor line and the auto scroll function. The tank pressure gauge will now also work if no tank profile is available, by interpolating between start and end pressure. The only thing that is still missing is the profile editing function.

Profile Ribbon

The ascend / descend profile calculation has been improved. With the old method the profile was difficult to read when the computer used short recording intervals. The new calculation outputs a much better profile which is more realistic.

In the layout tab of the ribbon I’ve included a ribbon gallery with layouts included in Diving Log. In future I want to add more layouts (e.g. for small Netbook screens) and a way to add your own layouts to this gallery.

New iPhone Dive Log 1.2 released

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Apple has just approved Greg’s latest iPhone version 1.2, which has some great new features. To take advantage of some of the features you should use already Diving Log 5.0 beta. Version 5.0 can store images (country flags, dive site photos, certification scans and personal photo) in the database additionally to linking the image file. That means, images added with Diving Log 5.0 will show up in the iPhone Dive Log 1.2 after synchronization. And images added on the iPhone will show up automatically in Diving Log 5.0 after syncing back to the desktop computer, even if the image files are not on your computer. Photos added to dives will not be stored in the database, because this would result in a really large database file, which slows down synchronization. To update your existing records and store linked images also in the database you must save each entry with an image again. Then you can sync your logbook to the iPhone and the images should be displayed.

Another feature in iPhone Dive Log 1.2 is support for buddy signatures. Your buddy can use his finger to sign a dive and you can sync the signature later back to the desktop computer and even print it. To display the signature in Diving Log 5.0 beta you must load the extended layout file or drag and drop the signature panel into the logbook window.

Diving Log 5.0 – Latest updates

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

The beta version is now since two weeks online and I’ve updated it about 3 or 4 times during this period (I just uploaded a new version). I want to give you a quick overview about some of the changes (I’ve done also a lot of small changes not mentioned here):

  • Bug fix for Oceanlog 2 and Sherwood import
  • Improved import for Delta P ProDive
  • Improved UDDF import for HeinrichsWeikamp DR 5
  • Improved Mares DRAK import for air integrated computers
  • Import added for the new Shearwater Desktop beta program
  • Divelogs.eu upload bugs fixed
  • Welcome Center added
  • Info dialog added
  • Compact database function added
  • Print engine runtime files updated with service pack
  • Localized more parts of the UI
  • Profile info panel added
  • Default gas icons added
  • Added a few more buttons to the profile ribbon tab

There are still some features missing, e.g. the MySQL export and upload, the profile section of the logbook is not complete (split and merge dives, export profile data, edit profile, red cursor line with auto scrolling, the compass, templates). I’ll add these features during the next weeks.

Overall the beta test is very positive, only a few minor bugs were discovered up till now. There seems to be a problem with the print function and designer when Diving Log 4.0 and 5.0 are running at the same time or on the same computer. If you discover some instability with the print function or designer in version 5.0, it is very likely that it is caused by version 4.0.

The new profile info panel and gas icon panel are hidden by default. You must either drag and drop them from the hidden items in the customization window, or download the “Extended Layout.xml” file and open it in the layout tab in the logbook window.

Diving Log 5.0 – Logbook Layout

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

I already wrote about this feature back in March, but now I’ve included the necessary functionality to save and restore the layouts. The complete layout of the logbook window is customizable, which means you can drag each data field around, remove fields you don’t need, create tab pages, and so on. You can save each layout as an xml file and restore it later at any time. And you can email me your layout files to share them with other Diving Log users. And you can create, for example, a layout for your large desktop monitor, and one for your small Netbook.

In this screenshot I’ve modified the layout a little bit, to display the buddies signature from the Windows Mobile version and also the air consumption, the SAC rate and the working pressure field:

If you want to display the buddy text field below the signature, for example, just click the “Customize” button in the ribbons layout tab and drag the buddy field below the signature field:

Drag and drop layout items

When you’re done, close the customization toolbox and click the “Save” button in the ribbon. When you open the logbook the next time, the same layout will be displayed. I think this is a great feature and I hope you will create amazing layouts and share them with other Diving Log users, just like for the report designer in the print function. You can download the layout from these screenshots and open it in the alpha version I’ll release next week.

Below you can watch 2 videos demonstrating the layout control (note: these videos show how to change the layout during development, but it works exactly the same when you change the layout during normal program execution):
