OneDrive Sync on Windows 8.1

If you want to use the OneDrive synchronization (former SkyDrive) in Diving Log 5.0 on Windows 8.1 you must ensure the “Divelog” folder within your OneDrive is available offline, otherwise Diving Log cannot access the files within this folder and the synchronization doesn’t work. To do this, open Windows Explorer, right click the “Divelog” folder in your OneDrive and select “Make available offline”. Please wait until your logbook files are downloaded to your PC, then you can use the sync function in Diving Log.

In Windows 8.1 OneDrive doesn’t download all files by default. Instead you have to use the above function to get Diving Log 5.0 OneDrive sync working.

Diving Log Touch – SkyDrive Sync

Today I’ve released the next update of Diving Log Touch to the Windows Store, which should be available within one week. Beside the new statistic charts I’ve also implemented SkyDrive sync into the logbook management pane. While you could save to SkyDrive (and Dropbox) before by using the file picker integration, the new integrated sync is more comfortable and easier to use. You can now sync easily between Diving Log 5.0, Diving Log for Windows Phone and Diving Log Touch.

New Diving Log Beta available

Today you can download a new beta version of Diving Log 5.0. Make sure you have version 5.0.8 installed before installing the beta update. This update brings the following new features:

  • DiveMate USB for Android sync (see below)
  • Diveboard.com sync (see below)
  • Search dive sites online
  • Hungarian language support (special thanks to Attila!)
  • Import dive profile CSV files (Logbook Window -> Profile Tab)

DiveMate USB is a new app for Android tablets and smartphones, which can download several dive computers right on your phone or tablet. It is available in the Google Play Store and can be synchronized with Diving Log 5.0 via USB or Dropbox. I’m really happy to see this app joining the existing Android apps ScubaLog and Dive Log and now there are 3 apps you can choose from (or you can use all three, of course).

Diveboard.com Sync:

With Diveboard.com, another great online logbook is now compatible with Diving Log 5.0. You can upload and download your dives to the website from the “Web” toolbar button in the main toolbar. Diveboard.com is along with divelogs.de also one of the data providers for the new online dive site search in the map window. All your dives are uploaded as private dives, but if you want, you can make them public on the website afterwards.

Please note, this is a beta update, so if you find any problems or bugs, please let us know. The new DiveMate and Diveboard.com sync functions involve several parties, and while we’ve tested everything intensively, there is a good chance that there are still some issues.

Diving Log for Windows Phone gets SkyDrive Sync

This one is long overdue, but now SkyDrive is finally integrated into Diving Log for Windows Phone. The update should show up on your phone within the next few hours. You’ll find SkyDrive now integrated into the sync page, which means you could drop Dropbox – if you want so (SkyDrive is also integrated into Diving Log 5.0 on the desktop).

I’ve also updated the design of the logbook hub start page, to resemble the design of Diving Log Touch for Windows 8. If you don’t like the white tiles, you can switch back to the accent color tiles in the app settings. The last new feature is the same split GPS coordinate editor I’ve added recently to Diving Log Touch. This update runs on WP 7 and WP 8 (Windows Phone 8 optimized version will be released in January).

SkyDrive Sync

Microsoft has finally released SkyDrive apps for Windows, Mac and smartphones and thus I could integrate a SkyDrive sync very easily into Diving Log. It works exactly the same as the existing Dropbox sync and is using a Divelog folder within your sync folder. You can backup your logbook data into the cloud storage and also sync logbook files across different computers. Just push the logbook into the cloud service, wait until the sync client has finished and then you can import the changes on the other PC into your logbook.

I’ve updated the recently published beta version if you want to try the SkyDrive sync now (you’ll find it in the “Web” dropdown menu of the main toolbar). Make sure that you’ve installed the SkyDrive client application for Windows. Please note, Diving Log for Windows Phone has SkyDrive not yet implemented, so you still have to use Dropbox to sync your dives to Windows Phone at the moment.

Diving Log 3.0 for Windows Phone released

The marketplace testing team was really quick and approved version 3.0 of Diving Log for Windows Phone (you should get the update notification in the next few hours on your 7.5 device). This is a big update and brings finally the long awaited editing functionality to your phone. Now you can add, edit and delete the following logbook data right on your phone:

  • Dives
  • Countries
  • Cities
  • Dive sites
  • Buddies
  • Equipment
  • Shops and dive centers
  • Trips
  • Personal data and certifications

I’ve implemented many data pickers, so you won’t have to type a lot of text. You can also add photos from the pictures hub or right from the camera and store them within your logbook. You can upload the changes to your Dropbox and import them to the Diving Log desktop version, where you could merge your dive data with profiles and other data from your dive computer. When you’re done you sync everything back to your phone.

In the next couple of minor updates I’ll add things like GPS coordinate picker for dive sites, buddy signature, equipment items used for a dive and more.

Two nice add-ons for Diving Log

Today I want to show you two nice add-ons for Diving Log. Both tools were created by Diving Log users and add some great features, which are currently not available in Diving Log. The first one is “Facebook Uploader“, which lets you post any dive from your logbook to your Facebook wall. It creates a profile picture and uploads the picture together with some dive data to your Facebook account. Andrew Forget, the developer of this add-on, is looking for translators for other languages. Currently it is available in English and German.

The 2nd add-on is “GeoTag“, which lets you pick the dive site coordinates within Google Earth, or optionally extracts them out of a geo-tagged photo file (created by a GPS equipped camera). That is great for those who don’t have a GPS device or GPS equipped smartphone. Just open the tool and pick for any dive site in your logbook the coordinates in Google Earth. Thanks to René for this great tool!

You can add both add-ons to the “Tools” menu in Diving Log (GeoTag adds itself automatically when you launch it the first time manually). To add the Facebook Uploader, click “Manage External Tools” and then “Add” and naviate to “C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\AndyDragon Software\Diving Log Software”.

Sneak peek at upcoming Windows Phone update

It has been a little silent around the Windows Phone 7 version of Diving Log during the last time, but today I want to show you some of the upcoming great new features of the next big update. Below you can see the new logbook hub, which is the main interface and gives you access to your most important logbook data on your phone:

For those who are not familiar with the Windows Phone hub concept: hubs are the main interface for data on the phone where you have your most important information right at your fingertips. You can swipe left and right and it serves as starting point to dig deeper into your data. You can change the background image and pick your favorite photo from the picture library. When you tap on the arrow symbol in the top right corner of the dive list, you will get to a jump list to navigate quickly to any dive. When you tap on one of the tiles on the right side, you’ll get another jump list with your detailed data, e.g. all your dive sites.

 

To get the logbook file(s) onto your phone you will use the Dropbox sync function, already implemented in Diving Log on the desktop. The update will be available in 2nd half of October and will likely target the new Mango version of Windows Phone. In September you can join a beta test for this version. If you are interested to participate, please write me a short email. Data editing and uploading to Dropbox will unfortunately not yet be implemented in this version.

New myUemis web sync

3 days ago I wrote about the current Uemis SDA situation and now you can sync your dives from the Uemis online logbook into Diving Log 5.0.4. You can find the new Uemis sync dialog in the Web menu in Diving Log:

Login with your Uemis username and password, then click the download button. The initial sync could take a while, depending how many dives you have in your online logbook. Future syncs will download only the new dives, which is a lot faster. In future, a complete offline sync is also planned. If you want to access the raw XML data from the myUemis website, you will find it after the sync in the folder C:\ProgramData\Diving Log\Uemis
