Update for Windows & Android

Thursday, December 22nd, 2022

A new update for Windows & Android has been released today, with some great new features and improvements:

  • Windows:
    • Downloader: Scorpena Alpha, Scubapro G2 TEK, Oceanic Geo Air
    • Suunto DM 1.x Import
    • Profile: Fill Option
    • Printing: Duplex support
    • Printing: Profile colors configurable
    • Signature Undo & Redo
    • EOL Import improvements
  • Android:
    • Encyclopedia of Life (EOL.org) Search & Import
    • Downloader: Oceanic Geo Air
    • Profile: Fill Option
    • Signature Undo & Redo

Here I want to show you some of the new features:

Often requested, you can now finally fill the profile with some color gradient:

Android (Profile Options)

Duplex printing is a bit more complex, so I explain this feature on a separate page. If you have a duplex printer and want to print more than one dive per page on the front and back, you can now do this very easily. Diving Log will alternate the print order automatically, so dive #2 is on the back of dive #1, for example.

You can now also configure all colors of the profile graphic in the report designer (double click profile graphic):

Profile print color options!

If you use the signature feature on Windows or Android, you can finally undo and redo the signature on a stroke level. So you do not have to clear everything if you just messed up your final touch. Just hit “Undo”:

Undo and Redo Signature on Windows & Android!

On Windows, you can finally import your 25 years old Suunto Dive Manager 1.6 .sdl logbook files, if you still have them anywhere.

On Android, you can now search for marine life on EOL.org and import the findings into your logbook:

Tap that little “e” in the marine life list

Search EOL.org

Import result into your logbook

I hope you enjoy these improvements and wish you and your family Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and hopefully some peaceful times! And it would be great if you recommend Diving Log to your friends, thank you!

Diving Log for Android Update

Wednesday, October 5th, 2022

A new update of the Diving Log Android app is now available on Google Play and HUAWEI AppGallery.

Available on Google Play

Explore it on AppGallery

For the first time since 2005, Diving Log has a new app icon! Professional graphic designers at Huawei created a modern, high resolution vector graphic following modern design guidelines for app icons. Here you can see the result:

The new app icon is a so called “adaptive icon”, which means the Android launcher you’re using decides about the final shape. So it might look like the image above, but it can also be a circle or a different rounded rectangle. It looks also great on high resolution screens, because of the vector graphics used. Here you can see what else has changed:

  • Support for new dive computers:
    • Cressi Michelangelo & Donatello
    • Seac Screen & Action
    • Shearwater Perdix 2 & Petrel 3
    • Sherwood Amphos Air 2.0
    • Ratio iX3M 2
    • HUAWEI Watch GT3 Pro
  • User Defined Fields
  • Divetime option for mm:ss
  • New Adaptive App Icon

You can now view and edit the user defined fields on Android, which are available in Diving Log 6.0 for Windows. Renaming the fields requires Android 11 or newer. Dive time can now be shown in minutes and seconds, which is available in the Windows version since May in version 6.0.25.

The new HUAWEI GT3 Pro released in August supports Freediving (Apnea) in Huawei Health. In the last few month, I was working closely with Huawei to add support in Diving Log for the Watch GT3. Now you can import dives recorded on the watch into Diving Log for Android via Health app (currently only available in the app from Huawei App Gallery).

Diving Log for Android Update

Tuesday, April 5th, 2022

I’m happy to announce another update for the Android app of Diving Log and also the availability in the HUAWEI AppGallery! Here are the improvements and new features in this update, also shown in some screenshots below.

Available on Google Play

Explore it on AppGallery

  • Jump List for Dives
  • Profile Cursor Line
  • Profile Measure Function
  • Profile Bookmark Editing
  • Share & Save Profile Picture
  • Share & Save Logbook Images
  • OSTC support for BLE Hardware
  • Tablet UI Improvements
  • OpenStreetMap as replacement on Huawei devices

Huawei was very helpful and dedicated bringing Diving Log to their app store. Because of missing Google functionality, I had to replace Google Maps with OpenStreetMap, but all other features are identical.

You can now open a panel to quickly navigate to a certain dive number. This is a lot easier than scrolling a long list of dives, even though there is fast scrolling at the right edge of the list:

Open Jump List

Quickly jump to dive

In the dive profile, you can move your finger to scroll a red cursor line. When the line is over a bookmark or gas switch, it will show up. You can also use this cursor to add a new bookmark at the cursor position. You can also save the profile picture to the picture gallery or share it to another app. Profile measuring is also available in the “Options” menu:

To edit or delete an existing bookmark, simply tap on it. Other pictures in the logbook can be also saved to the gallery or shared to other apps:

And last but not least, finally some more tablet improvements. The details list and details data screens are now merged together on large screen devices:

OneDrive and Google Drive sync in Android app

Thursday, March 3rd, 2022

I’m happy to announce OneDrive and Google Drive support in Diving Log for Android in addition to Dropbox! Syncing with the PC or iOS apps is now much easier.

When using Google Drive, you have to upload from the Android app to the cloud at the first time. This is because the app can only access files which it created. After the first upload from the Android app, you can overwrite the existing file from the PC version and the app can still access the file.

Version 5.1 is now available on Google Play:

Android – changes to logbook storage location

Tuesday, October 26th, 2021

Version 5.0.0 of Diving Log for Android has been released, which now targets Android 11, as required by Google. This has been a challenging release, because Android 11 does not allow apps access to the general file system anymore. Up to now, Diving Log stored the logbook files in the “Diving Log” folder in the root of the device. This folder was not deleted when the app was uninstalled, so your logbook files were not deleted either.

Android 11 requires storing all data within the internal app folder, which is deleted when the app is uninstalled. So, this requires some strategy to avoid accidentally data loss, e.g. when a user temporarily uninstalls the app because something doesn’t work.

Previous logbook location

New logbook location

Phone/Android/data/com.divinglog.divelog/files/Logbook

When you update from a previous version of Diving Log, you do not have to do anything. Diving Log will migrate all logbooks to the internal folder and automatically backup the logbooks from time to time to the former external “Diving Log” folder (which won’t be deleted). A “!!!FolderMoved!!!.txt” file is created in the old folder as indicator, which contains the path to the new folder.

Once you do a fresh install of the app, you have to manually select a backup folder to avoid deletion of your logbooks during uninstall. You can do this from the start screen shown below. You can also restore your logbooks from a previous backup folder. You can later configure the automatic backup in the app settings screen:

Start screen with backup and restore options

Configure backup in settings

Tip: You can select the backup folder on a removable SD Card, because you can easily retrieve the card even when the device does not boot anymore. Please remember, this automatic backup is still only locally on your device! So, if your Android device is lost or damaged, it won’t help you. Additionally, you should backup your logbook to the cloud or a PC.

Diving Log 6.0 can handle both logbook locations, so USB synchronization will work, no matter which Android app version you have.

You can see the current logbook location at the top of the “Logbook Management” screen. You can also use this screen to import any backups into the internal app logbook folder, if you’ve dismissed the start screen restore function:

Diving Log for Android Update

Friday, February 5th, 2021

Diving Log for Android received an update today with equipment service notifications and new dive computer models in the downloader:

  • Equipment Service Notifications
  • Garmin Mk1/Mk2/Mk2i Support
  • Divesoft Freedom/Liberty Support
  • Mares Horizon & Ratio 2021 Models

If you use the “Next Service” date fields in the equipment section of your logbook, you can now get automatic notifications on Android when the date is near. You can configure the timespan when you want to get notified and of course completely switch the notifications off in the app settings. There are also in-app visual hints in the logbook overview (red circle) and equipment list (wrench icon). Here you can see how it looks like:

Updates for Diving Log 6.0 and Android released

Saturday, December 19th, 2020

I’m happy to announce two updates, one for Diving Log 6.0 on Windows and one for Diving Log on Android:

Diving Log 6.0 Changelog:

  • Garmin Mk2/Mk2i Support
  • SeacSync Import
  • Tree Browser improvements (new: Shops/Dive Centers)
  • Dive Site GPS Import improved (Switch to Windows 10 API)
  • Map Window Navigation Panel (Windows 10 API)
  • OpenStreetMap and Divelogs.de sync issues fixed
  • Libdivecomputer Update (new: Aladin A2, Sherwood Sage)
  • Wlog Import .add file support

Diving Log Android Changelog:

  • Search Dives Function
  • Tree Browser (in App Main Menu)
  • Downloader: Sherwood Sage

Diving Log 6.0 can now download dives from the new Garmin Mk2 via USB, including tank pressure profile data. The tree browser window shows now directly all dives with a certain buddy (without the location sub tree nodes) and has a new “Dive Shop” root tree item.

Diving Log 6.0 is now using the Windows 10 location API for capturing GPS coordinates for a dive site and also includes the navigation panel in the map window, which you may know from the Android app. Of course it requires an external GPS receiver, because most PC’s don’t have GPS build in.

In Diving Log for Android you can now finally search your dives for certain values (numeric or string). You also have now the same tree browser functionality from the PC version.

Android Downloader Improvements

Friday, May 1st, 2020

Since the Diving Log Android Downloader was added last November I’ve released several improvements and bug fixes in a number of updates, which I want to outline here today. The current version is 4.4.2 and was published yesterday. If you’ve experienced any of these issues, please give it a try as they should be fixed now:

  • Downloading of only new dives may have not worked properly for some devices, e.g. Scubapro G2
  • Downloading of Suunto Vyper and Vyper 2 type computers works now
  • Reefnet Sensus devices work now
  • Atomic Cobalt support has been added
  • Oceanic BLE support has been added

Overall a lot of work went into stabilizing and improving the Android downloader in the last five month. Next I want to add mass storage devices like the Garmin Descent and Divesoft computers.
